Few mathematicians have graced their country’s stamps, banknotes and coins as often as Niels Henrik Abel. Memorials to Abel have also been raised throughout Norway.

On the centenary of his death in 1929, Abel was honoured with stamps issued in four denominations – 10, 15, 20 and 30 øre - green, brown, red and blue.

The only persons that had been depicted on Norwegian stamps till then were kings and Henrik Ibsen (in 1928).
