What is the index theorem?
Professor John Rognes explains the index theorem. (Foto: Lise Åserud/Scanpix) This year's Abel Prize was awarded jointly to Michael Francis Atiyah and Isadore M. Singer for their discovery and proof of the index theorem. After the announcement professor John Rognes gave a lecture explaining the index theorem. The Abel Committee referred to the index theorem as "one of the great landmarks of 20th century". In the forty years since its discovery, the theorem has had innumerable applications, first in mathematics, and then, beginning in the late 1970s, in theoretical physics.

Professor Ernesto Lupercio, Instituto Politécnico Nacional, Mexico, has been named the winner of the 2009 Srinivasa Ramanujan Prize. This was announced today, 22nd of December by the International Centre of Theoretical Physics in Trieste, Italy. The award ceremony will take place in Trieste in the summer of 2010. The Russian-French mathematician Mikhail Leonidovich Gromov, Institut des Hautes Études Scientifiques, Bures-sur-Yvette, France received the 2009 Abel Prize from His Majesty King Harald at an award ceremony in Oslo today, 19 May. Her Majesty Queen Sonja also attended the award ceremony. The Minister of Research and Higher Education, Tora Aasland, was among the many other prominent persons present. The Abel Prize that carries a cash award of NOK 6,000,000 (close to € 700,000, US$ 950,000), is awarded by the Norwegian Academy of Science and Letters. The Abdus Salam International Centre for Theoretical Physics (ICTP) will present its annual Ramanujan Prize for young mathematicians from developing countries at an awards ceremony to be held at the Norwegian Academy of Science and Letters in Oslo on 20 May.
