HM King Harald to present the 2003 Abel Prize
to Jean-Pierre Serre

In celebration of the very first awarding of the Abel Prize, various events are scheduled to take place to honour Abel Laureate Jean-Pierre Serre as well as the memory of Niels Henrik Abel. The press is welcome to all events except the audience at the Palace.
What follows is a preliminary briefing on the events we believe may be of interest to the press.

The Abel Monumentet1 June 5.00pm: WREATH LAYING
Jean-Pierre Serre will lay a wreath at Gustav Vigeland’s Abel Monument on Abelhaugen in Slottsparken (the Palace grounds).


Georg Sverdrups Building2 June 10.00am – 11.00am: ABEL LECTURE
Jean-Pierre Serre will hold an Abel Lecture entitled Prime numbers, equations and modular forms in Auditorium 1 in Georg Sverdrups hus (the University Library) on the Blindern campus of the University of Oslo.


2 June 12.00pm – 5.00pm: MATHS CARNIVAL
Maths carnival on Universitetsplassen in Central Oslo. Pupils aged 10 to 12 will participate in playful mathematical activities.
At 3.15pm, Minister of Education and Research Kristin Clemet and the Abel Laureate Jean-Pierre Serre will visit and hand out prizes to the winners of:
• KappAbel (contest for year 9 pupils)
• The Abel Competition (contest for upper secondary school pupils)
Compère: Stian Barsnes Simonsen, known from NRK’s Reser programme
Entertainment: Vegar "Shortcut" Olsen, known from NRK’s Topp 20 programme

The Royal Palace3 June 12.00pm: AUDIENCE
Jean-Pierre Serre will have an audience at the Palace.


Munch3 June 2.00pm: PRESENTATION OF THE 2003 ABEL PRIZE
The Abel Prize will be presented by HM King Harald in the University of Oslo Aula in Central Oslo.
Musical performance by Det norske Solistkor and Nils Petter Molvær.
Everyone must be seated by 1.45pm.

Akershus Castle3 June 7.00pm: BANQUET AT AKERSHUS CASTLE
Prime Minister Kjell Magne Bondevik, on behalf of the Government, will host the Abel Banquet at Akershus Castle.
Their Majesties King Harald and Queen Sonja will attend.

A mathematics symposium will be held in Auditorium 1 in Georg Sverdrups hus (the University Library) on the Blindern campus of the University of Oslo.


The Norwegian Academy of Science and Letters4 June 7.00pm – 11.00pm: GARDEN PARTY
The Norwegian Academy of Science and Letters will host a garden party at its premises in Drammensveien 78.
